CCTV brackets and mountings safety and security

CCTV cameras and monitors are common place in our lives today. No matter where we go, pubs, shops, hospitals, railway stations and in the town centre there are CCTV monitors and cameras everywhere . In a DIY shop recently I was horrified to see a CCTV monitor resting on a domestic portable TV bracket, the type you would buy in ASDA for a few pounds, and it was 'secured' by an elasticated rope !! The irony is that it was a DIY store. Imagine the consequences if that CCTV monitor fell from the bracket, or indeed the vibrations of a delivery lorry or train loosened the webbing of the mounting sufficient for it to fall on a baby. .

I wondered where the blame would lie if such an incident caused death or serious injury due to the lack of a bracket designed for the job. Who would blame who? If the shop owner asked a security engineer to install a CCTV monitor, who has the duty of care to ensure that the correct mounting and bracket is used to suit the particular type of monitor and its resting place?

No doubt cost would be a factor for some clients and I am sure that professional security engineers and CCTV installers would insist on a certain quality of bracket and mounting. When we look at the names on the monitors we see JVC, Hitachi, Philips, Sanyo, Samsung, Panasonic etc - all quality names. However they make the monitors, they do not install them nor supply brackets. We wouldn't expect a client to specify a particular CCTV monitor bracket or mounting but we would certainly expect the engineer or installer to.

There is an army of CCTV engineers and installers in the UK, many connected to reputable organisations such as NACOSS who regulate and inspect firms which install, maintain, and monitor electronic security systems. Their fitters would not dream of using inferior brackets and mounts. One would think that location and environmental conditions would dictate a particular type of bracket or mounting, with that in mind it goes to say that it wouldn't be an application for a mass produced product because two jobs are rarely the same. No doubt there are mass produced and imported CCTV mounts and brackets. I found that reputable suppliers and contractors such as ADT, Gardiner Group, QED, Sensormatic, Tyco, Vision Link etc use CCTV mountings and brackets from Gardner Engineering, manufacturers of CCTV hardware products which include Monitor mounts, Camera brackets, Swivel mounts to fit Panasonic, Phillips, Hitachi, Sanyo, JVC and Samsung. Products etc.

Gardner Engineering products have been supplied by ADT, Gardiner Group, QED, Sensormatic, Tyco, Vision Link etc into major outlets such Texaco, Shell, B&Q, Sainsbury, Kwiksave, Co-op and ASDA to name but a few. Clearly the products are strong, safe, reliable and easy to install. Gardner also carries a moderate amount of stock allowing them to fulfill last-minute orders, delivered on a next-day basis. So there's no excuse for elasticated rope and weak portable TV brackets! Certain CCTV installations would require custom-made solutions to meet the needs of clients who may be experiencing difficulty in finding the correct fitments.
