LEARN ENGLISH BY VISITING LANGUAGE SCHOOLS IN BRITAIN |
|
Anyone learning English will understand the difficulties and problems associated with the English language and its make-up - even English people can stumble too - so how do foreign students succeed? Clearly, the best method of learning English would be to stay with a host family in England where students can learn English by living with English families and becoming part of our English lifestyle for a short period. As a parent my greatest concern would be my child's welfare whilst living away from home with strangers. In reality a young person is waved away by parents who begin a nightmare which will not end until the safe return of the child. . To the youngster, it is an adventure and it will be fun. Okay, I may be a scaremonger but I am a parent and all parents worry. So, let's focus on this scenario, we have a child who is to visit England to learn the English language and stay with a host family for the duration. It is natural to be concerned and quite reasonable to want to dig deeper and learn more about the English host family and indeed the teachers in England. The quality of accommodation and indeed where in England the language school is. I don't believe for one moment that any parent would respond to a classified advertisement in newspaper or a postcard in a shop window which may read something like this.;
Personally, I would find a qualified, established English language school that have a dedicated ethos and visitors safety is paramount. One which require all host families to adhere to child protection declarations and take references on all hosts and teachers; and provide comprehensive insurance for all visitors. And that's just the beginning, I would want proper assurances about the host family and accommodation quality, the hosts need to be substitute families during the stay; they cannot replace the family but certainly create a warm family environment. The English language school should provide hosts, teachers and visitors with clear guidelines about mutual expectations. This would put aside much apprehension and avoid disappointment. Location would be important to me, England is a beautiful country and some areas are steeped in history and culture where tourists and residents happily mix. Colchester for example is Britain's oldest town, it is in the County of Essex, declared to be "County of Hidden Treasures" and very close to London, Cambridge and Kent which is of course perfect for the channel crossing. With my list of what I would expect from an English language school - I contacted the Association of British Language Schools (ABLS). To become an approved member of ABSL a school must undergo a thorough inspection process. All members are then subject to an annual inspection which covers teaching standards, school facilities, student welfare and accommodation. The receptionist was not at all put out by by thorough grilling and pointed me to New Century Study Danbury, Chelmsford. I contacted Janet McGuirk on +44 1245 227215 - info@newcenturystudy.co.uk and asked about New Century Study's teaching quality. This is Mrs McGuirk's response.
