Car Sharing, save money and help save the planetPeter Yexley looks the benefits of car pooling. Many of us don't think twice about sharing a journey ..... on the bus, train, plain or boat, we all share (and complain about the journey) . But when it comes to sharing our car, now that's a different story. Whilst crawling in traffic I began looking at all the cars with no passengers, mine included. I looked at four cars in a line, each driven by a mum or nanny and each had a child in the car - all with the same school uniform, clearly going to the same school. The cars were all big 4X4 petrol guzzlers and I couldn't help wondering if the drivers knew each other - the school children certainly did! As other lone drivers silently cursed 'The School Run', it crossed my mind about Reno, in Nevada where I remember looking at one lane that was particularly created strictly for car sharers. Even a free car park for 'Car Poolers', the principle is simple; one drives to a car pool car park, meets the other car sharers and they all begin their car sharing journey to work !! I still have not moved more that 100 yards and I can't help thinking that even if each car shared with just one driver, this traffic jam would be halved, and the more people that shared a car, the shorter the line of cars - perhaps we would not even be in a traffic jam? The savings too in petrol and wear and tear must be massive - the flaw in the system was quite a big one, how do you find a compatible car sharer, after all sharing a car with someone who you don't get on with has its problems !! The concept is green, good for the planet and our bank balance. I'm now on one of my missions - I worked out that if I drove my car 50 miles to and from work, five times per week at 25mpg - I would save a staggering £1400 per year - that's a free holiday!! The internet is a natural place to find a car share co-ordinator and I found www.shareajourney.com who seem to have the system rather nicely tuned. |

Shareajourney.com have usefully covered not just the school run and commuter car sharing but also other aspects that I truly didn't think of. Matchday and other major sporting events and tourist attractions, so they will help with a car share to say, football or tennis. Also Shareajourney will help with one off journeys such as business trips and other commercial journeys such as interviews or appointments and meetings. An ideal solution for fleet managers in light of the new company car taxation change. |

This is how it works By selecting one of the top buttons (e.g. Commuters) you can log your journey offer, request or both. Before registration you are asked read, print, save and agree to the following three pages (which are also available from our home page): Safety, Payment, Terms and Conditions There are two areas, one for individuals and one for companies. Your company may use Shareajourney.com to assist employees. If someone else has already logged a journey, which matches your requirements, their journey details will be listed for you. You then get the choice of whether to email them or not. Your email address is confidential until you decided to email someone. If there are currently no matches, your requirements can remain on Shareajourney until someone finds your journey and emails you. You have the facility to delete your own logged journeys and to edit (change) your personal details. The Commuters page is for all regular journeys like your daily journey to work or a regular weekend trip etc. The Occasional page is for logging any non-regular journeys that are date-specific, like business and other one-off journeys. On the other pages, Eventday, Matchday and Schoolrun, you can log a journey from your home location to a given event, football team or school, either for a one off or regular journeys. In the case of Matchday, this will enable you to find other supporters in your area for future traveling arrangements. The Eventday destinations are either year-round attractions (e.g. Warwick Castle) or a calendared event (e.g. a major rock festival). The Schoolrun page enables schools to instantly set up their own car-sharing scheme and is a totally free service.
